“Towards sustainable river management of water and sediment in Albania. Integrating the hydro-morpho-eco paradigm from research to river management.” This was the theme of the workshop organized by the UNESCO chair in within NaturAlbania project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, Tirana.

Several Albanian researchers and local authorities participated to the event. Concepts, tools, methods, results and case studies were presented by researchers who have been working in Albania for many years in the river field, stimulating discussion among the authorities and providing an essential scientific basis towards sustainable and participatory river management.

The workshop was well attended by key institutional bodies involved in river management in Albania and a rich exchange between international experts, NGOs and governmental agencies. It is part of a larger 3-day event. Among the activities of the event, the researchers from the UNESCO Chair / DICAM / C3A organized a training to local technicians and the formal handover of the newly installed river gauging station to the municipality of Permet, a village on the Vjosa River, took place. University of Trento activities within NaturAlbania project includes the reconstruction of recent morphological trajectories of the Vjosa river and its tributaries, the analysis of anthropic and climatic drivers of change and the installation of a pilot automatic gauging station to support river corridor monitoring, management and conservation. Furthermore, a baseline assessment of Cultural Ecosystem Services along the Vjosa river corridor and further Albanian Protected Areas has been carried out, to mainstream mapping and assessment of Ecosystem Services and Natural Capital evaluation and conservation.
